By now, I'm thinking constantly: "But haven't I said that already?" As is obvious, these three posts on e-citizenship are not three different 'chapters' of the one idea but repeats of much the same thoughts, given I feared the other posts hadn't arrived. However, having just experienced them as a listener rather than a speaker, I do see some progression.

The culture of the voice space: my second one

I am reluctant to make a third voice posting in such quick succession so, instead, will say what I want to say via the printed word. I think a combination of Michael's suggested mind mapping, I'd suggest the 'Culture of the Voice Space', and a grid listing the virtues, limitations and best uses of each of the voice tools would make a pretty powerful educational resource. Some of the elements that would contribute to the mindmap would be Brad's headings, for example, Tools, Purposes, Written and/or Spoken, Role of Contributor (Author or Commentator), Timing (infinite or limited), Single or Multiple Access, Values (open, closed, collaborative, democratic), Public and/or Private and the Space Itself (Name, Ownership etc.).

As an aside, when it comes to the space itself, and I'm now thinking of the literal or physical space, for me, aesthetics plays a key role in how I respond there. I find so many online spaces drab and dull and therefore dampening in some way. Conversely, beautiful spaces free my voice and my spirit.

So, does the axis now have companions?

My only consolation is that two voice contributions are never exactly the same and it would be interesting to compare how and why they differ. I guess we'd see Brad's wonderful idea about tracing 'the evolution of thinking' in action.

I agree Brad - this was a light bulb moment worth posting immediately! I may voice blog it later, but it may be the voice equivalent of mind-mapping software. In fact if you could marry the two together (go HERE for a text only example) then we would really have a great tool, and process, for tracking how people think and arrived at a particular conclusion. Maths invades the Humanities!

The list below comes from a book I've never read. It is not the list I'd necessarily make but I found it thought-provoking. When considering reflectiveness, what I'd want, as well, is a critical dimension running through all our practices. For example, one of the mantras in all my classes is: 'Who says so? And in whose interests?' In other words, who is being heard and who not? what explains this and what are the consequences?

I think this sort of reflectiveness, asking questions about power and powerlessness, ought to be integrated into all our educational work, online, f2f and in audiospace. This probably means, as Brad has often said, thoughtful, well-crafted guidance (in the form of more questions!) from the teacher. At least, initially.
